Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (August 8, 2024) — The Door County Historical Society invites you to join us for a captivating dinner program on August 26, 2024, as we delve into the history of early post offices in Door County. This event will feature a presentation by Tom Anschutz, the current USPS Postmaster in Egg Harbor and a lifelong resident of Door County.
Tom Anschutz will share the fascinating story of the development of the US postal system in Door County, beginning with the establishment of the first post office in 1854. Despite the Constitution granting Congress the authority to establish post offices and post roads, it took 33 years after Green Bay’s post office opening for Door County to have its own. The first post office in the region was on Washington Island, serving as a crucial connection in the rugged, unsettled wilderness of the peninsula. Before this, fishermen relied on fish buyers from Green Bay to bring them mail during summer visits.
The dinner program will be held at the Nightingale Supper Club, located at 1541 Egg Harbor Rd, Sturgeon Bay. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., with the program starting promptly at 6:00 p.m. Dinner will follow at 7:00 p.m., offering a choice of BBQ ribs, deep fried perch, or Fettuccine Alfredo, along with dessert and coffee. Attendees do not need to select their meal in advance.
The cost of the sit-down dinner is $40 per person, with a discounted rate of $35 for Door County Historical Society members. To reserve your spot, please RSVP online or send your response to our office at PO Box 71, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235 by August 19th.
