Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (January 20, 2025) — The Door County Historical Society is kicking off its 2025 “Dine & Discover” series with an engaging luncheon event featuring a captivating journey into the history of street clocks. Join us on Saturday, February 22, at the Sturgeon Bay Yacht Club, 600 Nautical Drive, for this unique program that blends local history, fine dining, and community camaraderie.
The spotlight of the afternoon will be Gary Vitse, a Sturgeon Bay resident and dedicated clock collector. Gary will delve into the fascinating world of street clocks, sharing stories of their rise as symbols of precision and civic pride in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He will also recount the history of his own historic street clock located on Memorial Drive in Sturgeon Bay—one of the last remaining examples of this craftsmanship in Wisconsin. These clocks, often iconic fixtures in bustling downtowns, once served as gathering points and practical timekeepers for the public. The program promises to give attendees a glimpse into the artistry, engineering, and community significance of these towering timepieces, which are increasingly rare today.
Doors open at 11:30 a.m., with lunch served at noon. Guests can choose from three delicious entrées: Cherry BBQ Meatloaf, Chicken Velouté, or a Vegetarian Apple Gorgonzola Salad, followed by a decadent cherry cheesecake dessert paired with coffee. Admission is $40 per person ($35 for Door County Historical Society members). Please specify your entrée choice when registering.
This event offers a delightful combination of history, food, and fellowship—perfect for history enthusiasts and anyone interested in the charm of bygone eras.
