Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (April 25, 2025) – The Door County Master Gardeners Association will present its final public program of the spring season, “Building Gardens, Not Collections,” on Tuesday, May 13 at 6:30 p.m. at Crossroads at Big Creek. The timing couldn’t be better for gardeners preparing for spring planting.
Several years ago, a speaker humorously described “CPAS—Compulsive Plant Acquisition Syndrome,” a condition many gardeners know all too well. As local plant sales ramp up, including the popular Master Gardener Plant Sale, both experienced and novice gardeners often find themselves purchasing more plants than they planned—simply because they’re irresistible.
This month’s featured speaker, Nick Ternes, owner of the small mail-order nursery Botanophilia LLC in Antigo, will help gardeners channel that enthusiasm into intentional design. His talk will focus on how to apply basic design principles to transform a collection of plants into a cohesive, beautiful garden.
Botanophilia specializes in shade-loving plants such as hostas—especially relevant for many Door County gardeners—but Nick describes himself as “a horribly obsessed plant geek” who grows a little of everything. His website and blog offer a wealth of inspiration for gardeners of all levels.
In addition to the May 13 program, the Door County Master Gardeners host a monthly “Growing Together Education Series” featuring pre-recorded webinars. The next session, “Soil Testing: When, Why & How,” will be screened on Monday, May 12 at 1:30 p.m. at Crossroads. This program will provide valuable tips to help gardeners choose the right plants for their landscape conditions. Like all Master Gardener programs, it is free and open to the public.
Armed with new knowledge, gardeners will be ready to make informed choices at the Annual Master Gardener Plant Sale, happening Friday and Saturday, May 23 & 24 at the Peninsular Agricultural Research Station, located at 4312 Highway 42, Sturgeon Bay.
All educational programs are held at the Collins Learning Center at Crossroads at Big Creek, 2041 Michigan Street, Sturgeon Bay, and are free and open to the public.
