Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (January 8, 2021) – The weekend officially kicks off on Friday, February 12 with the Candlelight Ski & Snowshoe at Crossroads at Big Creek Nature Preserve from 6PM – 8PM. Trails that wind through Crossroads’ 125-acre Big Creek nature preserve will be lit by luminaries to provide a magical, memorable winter experience. Crossroads will offer a candlelight hike if there’s not enough snow to ski. Volunteers will be on hand to help everyone get started. Staggered departures and safetly protocols will be followed. Please avoid others when on the trails and step off the trails when necessary to avoid contact. This is a family-friendly event offered at no charge. Freewill donations to Crossroads will be accepted and appreciated. No reservations are necessary.
The fun continues on Saturday, February 13 in Downtown Sturgeon Bay for the 16th annual Fire & Ice, ice carving competition. Enjoy the beauty of winter while watching ice carvers of all levels and professional snow sculptors create stunning masterpieces. Professional snow sculptors are scheduled to carve six snow blocks (weather permitting), putting their artistic skills to the test to outdo each other’s creativity. Between 9AM and 2PM, volunteer carvers of all ages and skill levels will creatively turn a 300-pound crystal clear ice block into an “ice-terpiece.” They will compete for the People’s Choice Award, and cash prizes for first, second and third place in beginner, intermediate and advanced categories. A panel of judges will start discussing placings and making determinations after 2PM.
All snow and ice carving locations are marked on the Fire & Ice brochure. The brochure also contains various Fire & Ice weekend happenings and is your guide to enjoying the winter weekend in Sturgeon Bay. Brochures can be picked at the Destination Sturgeon Bay Welcome Center and various businesses in Sturgeon Bay the week of the event. Masks and social distancing are requested while viewing the ice and snow sculptures.
For the second year in a row, don’t forget to create your own snow-friend during the Community Snowman Build (weather permitting)! Beginning Saturday, February 13 at 9AM, stop at Martin Park to build your very own snowman. Carrots, scarves, and other snowman making materials will be provided.
The Fire & Ice Gala goes virtual in 2021! Customized for your comfort, this year’s event may look a little different but we promise it will be worth it! Guests will have a choice between various Gala Gifts that include dinner provided by Scaturo’s Baking Co & Café, dessert provided by Stone Harbor Resort and an event link to a special virtual show featuring Charlie Berens. The virtual show, A Conversation with Charlie Berens, begins promptly at 7pm and will be moderated by Let’s Go Door County. Charlie Berens is an Emmy-winning journalist, comedian, host and creator of Manitowoc Minute, a Midwest comedic new series. The online auctionAfter the virtual show is over, join us for Sturgeon Bay’s Winter on the Water Fireworks Show. The fireworks show will begin at approximately 9PM and will be shot off from the train spur bridge located adjacent to Sonny’s Italian Pizzaria. There will be no public access to the train spur bridge during the show.
