Write On, Door County presents United States Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith in a public reading on Thursday, October 11, 2018, at the Southern Door Community Auditorium in Brussels, WI. A goodwill donation by attendees is requested, but regardless, no one will be turned away from the door.
A bus has been chartered by Write On to bring residents of Northern Door County to and from the SDCA. “We realize that there are many people who would like to attend the event but are not able to make the drive for a variety of reasons,” said Write On Executive Director Jerod Santek. “We hope that by providing transportation many people, including students and seniors, will be able to take part in this unique opportunity to hear one of our country’s finest poets.”
The schedule for pick-ups are:
- Scandia Village, 10560 Applewood Dr., Sister Bay, boarding time 4:30 – 4:45 pm
- Baileys Harbor Public Parking Lot, 2404 Park Rd., boarding time, 5 – 5:15 pm
- Donald & Carol Kress Pavilion, 7845 Church St., Egg Harbor, boarding time 5:30 – 5:45 pm
The bus will begin its return trip at approximately 8:30 pm. Bus passengers will receive priority in the book signing line so that they can be on board in a timely manner.
Bus seating is limited to 56 people. Though free, reservations are required. People may register for the bus online at www.writeondoorcounty.org or by calling 920-868-1457. Santek gratefully acknowledged Door County Medical Center, Lamer’s Bus Lines, and Young Automotive for their support of the transportation costs.
Smith was appointed to a second term as the nation’s Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry by Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden. As part of her second term, Smith has edited an anthology titled American Journal: Fifty Poems for Our Time, published by Graywolf Press in September. The poems selected for this project offer 50 different viewpoints on America, including stories of loss, the experiences of immigrants, acts of injustice, and poems that evoke history and celebrate America’s diversity.
In addition to her public reading, Smith will conduct a program for area high school students at Sevastopol School. For more information about the program, visit www.writeondoorcounty.org.
