Gibraltar Historical Association: Seasonal Opening Announcement

June 11, 2026 by Laurel Ciohon

Fish Creek, Wis. (June 11, 2026) – During this season, you can explore history in Fish Creek in three ways: visit the Alexander Noble House, join a docent-led walking tour, or enjoy a free concert.

The time has come to dust off the old and bring in the new exhibit at the Alexander Noble House, now transformed into a house in mourning. The clocks have stopped, the mirrors are covered, and the rooms are filled with authentic period clothing and fascinating relics that reflect past mourning customs.

When we share these traditions and stories, we can see that people in the past accepted death as a normal part of life. Families often faced the uncertainty of disease and illness. Mothers sometimes died during childbirth, and many children did not survive to adulthood. By learning about these traditions, we can understand how earlier generations coped with death as something they encountered every day. They supported each other through grief and loss. We share these ordinary rituals and help you better understand some of the customs we still use today.

Our exhibit includes mourning gowns and accessories from the late 1800s, hair art, a connection to Abraham Lincoln, a death mask, and more. Come visit to see, learn about, and experience traditions that are often hidden from view. We invite you to “Turn Back the Veil” at the Alexander Noble House Museum.

Recognized as both a National and State Historic Place, the museum was built in 1875 and is a true example of a Greek Revival farmhouse. The Town of Gibraltar bought the Noble House with money raised by the Gibraltar Historical Association. Our mission is to show what daily life in Door County was like around the turn of the century.

We open from June 16 th, Tuesday through Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Docent-led walking tours will take you on a relaxed walk and answer your questions along the way. A great way to experience the history of our many turn-of-the-century buildings in our charming village. The walk will introduce you to the historic buildings in downtown Fish Creek and provide insight into life in the early days of this well-loved Door County settlement.

All walks start at Gibraltar’s Old Town Hall, 4176 Maple Street, at 9:00 am and finish on the front porch of the Alexander Noble House Museum at 4167 Main Street. Walks will be canceled if it rains.

Tours will begin June 17th on Wednesdays and Saturdays starting at 9:00 a.m.

Another option is our free audio tour, available by simply dialing the number on your cell phone. Rack cards are available on the front porch of the Noble House or at the Visit Fish Creek Visitor Center.

Free concerts at Noble Square are a great way to relax in the shade and enjoy local talent. Some performers are new, some are familiar favorites, and all are worth seeing. The park is just a short walk from shops, restaurants, lodging, the waterfront, and more. Noble Square Park is a musical oasis you will not want to leave.

Concerts are every other Tuesday starting June 23rd, from 3:00-5:00 pm.

If it rains, concerts will be moved inside to the Old Town Hall at the corner of Maple and Spruce.
