A sudden shot from the cannon and they are off to the races…sailboat races, that is. Join Barb McKesson, Fish Creek resident and local historian, on September 27 at 7 pm and help fill in the missing pieces and parts of Fish Creek’s Yacht Club history. This final “GHA Talk” of 2018 is an evening of photos, conversation and “captains” discussing the history of the Yacht Club. Listen to the stories of coming around the “mark” or “losing air” and imagine “Carla” crossing the finish line with “Ellisar” with “Windbird” not far behind.
Last summer GHA was given minutes from the Fish Creek Yacht Club, which added to more discussion with summer resident Rudy Carl. He participated in numerous races and proved to be the one to beat year after year. The yacht club is an interesting topic to explore and determine why the races began, why the races faded away, and how the Cottage Row families played a role in origin. Come to see numerous images, some never before seen artifacts and certainly a tale or two.
Bring your own interesting photos or mementos to share and questions to ask. Barb will do her best to answer and maybe a few sailors or descendents will share a tale or two about Fish Creek’s Harbor. Dress like a yacht’s man, or a spectator or just wear your Sperry’s and come to the show.
Scheduled for Thursday, September 27th, at 7:00 p.m. at the Old Town Hall at 4167 Maple Street in beautiful Fish Creek. Enjoy an evening of interesting stories and accounts from a time way in Gibraltar’s past. The event is free and all are welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be served.
