Greens N Grains: Local, Organic & Hard-to-Find Items
By Laurel Ciohon
I absolutely love Greens n’ Grains in Egg Harbor and you should too! Why? Because Greens n’ Grains is Door County’s only full service natural foods store. It offers fresh, frozen, canned and bulk organic groceries, dairy products, bakery, meat and seafood, wine and spirits, bulk nuts and grains, organic coffee and tea, locally made personal care products, healthy pet food, vitamins and supplements, and environmentally-friendly cleaning products. If you’re like me and appreciate local, organic produce and other hard-to-find organic grocery items, Greens n’ Grains is your place to shop!
I stop at Greens n’ Grains at least once a week and hardly mind the 15 minute drive it takes for me to get there. The employees are always kind and greet you with enthusiasm. There is always fresh, seasonal produce to choose from that is brought in by tons of local farmers. A typical grocery trip for me at Greens n’ Grains includes all the fresh produce I can get (tomatoes, spinach and carrots are my favorites), Amy’s Organic frozen dinners, almond milk, Veganaise (by far, the best tasting mayo you eat – do yourself a favor and get some!), local cheese, gluten-free bread, organic baking products, and Fromm’s dog food from Mequon, WI.
Greens n’ Grains also has a café adjacent to the grocery store. There is a full-service coffee and espresso bar featuring Collectivo Coffee (formally Alterra Coffee). They serve breakfast, lunch and early dinner specialty dishes made exclusively from healthy, natural and organic products. They have indoor and outdoor seating with free WiFi access too. During the quiet winter months, the Café even hosts the Green Door Film Society screenings every other Thursday with dinner-and-a-movie specials!
The late 19th century store building that houses Greens n’ Grains in downtown Egg Harbor is owned by Kathy Navis. The building was originally a general mercantile store that offered hardware and living supplies available in the late 1800’s. Kathy strives to make her store a “one-stop shop” and wants her customers to feel good about their purchasing decisions. She believes that consumers have an impact on their personal health and the health of the planet by buying organic and all-natural products.
Coming from living in large cities these last 10 years and having unlimited access to grocery stores like Whole Foods, I am grateful that there is a healthy store option for me to take advantage of while living in Door County. I am thrilled to support them and love that they maintain regular daily hours year-round (10am-5pm in winter, 9am-6pm in summer). Greens n’ Grains is located at 7821 Hwy 42 in downtown Egg Harbor. 920.868.9999. www.greens-n-grains.com.
