Griffon String Quartet Awarded ‘Doctors in Recital’ Grant

April 29, 2024 by Laurel Ciohon

The ensemble was chosen because of its positive impact on the communities in northeast Wisconsin.

Sister Bay, Wis. (April 29, 2024) – Green Bay’s Doctors in Recital organization selected the Griffon String Quartet to be a Music Education grant recipient. Every January, Doctors in Recital holds a highly anticipated concert featuring local medical providers performing music to raise money for local causes. Each act is headlined by an area physician with a passion for music, as well as a commitment to patient care. Many others are healthcare providers who share the stage as back-up musicians or choir members. Since 2006, Doctors in Recital has raised more than a half million dollars.

The Griffon String Quartet performed at the organization’s 2024 event for the first time. The $7,500 grant is a goal for funds to be raised at the 2025 concert.

“Doctors in Recital exists to make a difference by making music,” said Board President Kim Schefchick. “Our goal has always been to make a positive impact in our community.” The Griffon String Quartet’s award is to support its work with children in northeast Wisconsin via its Einstein Series, a highly interactive program for school-age children. Students participate in private or group lessons or educational outreach programs. The quartet visits schools and classrooms to perform and discuss string quartet music, relating it specifically to relevant topics in their studies and their lives.

One of the most vibrant and engaging quartets of its generation, the Griffon String Quartet was formed in the fall of 2018 as a collaboration led by Midsummer’s Music. GSQ enriches the lives of children and adults throughout northeast Wisconsin through concerts, workshops, and music education outreach. The extraordinary musicians, who have performed with orchestras and ensembles around the globe, are equally dedicated to music education and inspiring the next generation of music lovers. Each member of the Griffon String Quartet has advanced degrees and significant professional experience, both as educators and performers, and they have been recognized for “their youthful vigor, which is absolutely infectious!”

Midsummer’s Music was co-founded in 1990 by Jim and Jean Berkenstock, long-time Door County summer residents and principal orchestral players with the Lyric Opera of Chicago. What began as two concerts among friends has become one of the Midwest’s most anticipated chamber music series, bringing thousands of chamber music enthusiasts from around the globe to the magical Door County Peninsula.
