The Door County Historical Society will host its monthly dinner program, “Historic Fashion from the Carrol C. and Dr. Hubert D. Grota Collection,” presented by Catherine Grota Sahlin, on Monday, September 23, at 6:00 pm at The Lodge at Leathem Smith located at 1640 Memorial Drive, Sturgeon Bay.
Catherine is the granddaughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. H.D. Grota. Dr. Grota practiced medicine in Door County for over 35 years. His wife, Carrol, attended the Chicago Normal School of Physical Education for Women, and played on their field hockey team. Her gym bloomers and bathing suit will be on display during the presentation.
Other items on display will include men’s and women’s clothing and accessories dating back to the late 1800s. In addition to these items, Catherine will share photos of other pieces in the collection.
Due to the Great Depression, many families saved clothing and materials, as they were scarce. Catherine is excited to share this extensive collection of period garments that have been saved and stored for over 60 years.
Catherine has loved clothing and sewing since she was a young girl. She received a B.S. in Apparel Technology from Purdue University and holds a Masters Degree in Fine Arts in Textile Design from the Rochester Institute of Technology – School for American Craftsman.
Her professional background includes Bridal Designer at the House of Bianchi in Boston, Costume Technician at the Ballet Met Columbus Ohio, Technical Designer at the Limited Too girls clothing manufacturer. She has also led student costumers at her local High School Theater program.
The Monday, September 23 dinner will be broiled cod, 7 oz filet mignon (medium), or a combo platter. The entree includes veggies, mashed potatoes, bread, salad, and dessert. The price is $30 for members, $35 for guests.
This program is at The Lodge at Leathem Smith located at 1640 Memorial Drive, Sturgeon Bay on September 23 at 6pm.
