History Days Kick-Off Event Launches Weeklong Celebration of Door County History

June 1, 2026 by Laurel Ciohon

Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (June 1, 2026) —  The Door County Historical Society is thrilled to host the Kick-Off Event for History Days 2026 on Monday, June 15, at 10:00 a.m. at Heritage Village, 2041 Michigan Street in Sturgeon Bay. Residents and visitors alike are invited to attend the free Kick-Off event and discover the many ways Door County’s rich history is being preserved and shared.

Supported by the Heritage Alliance of Door County, History Days is a weeklong celebration of Door County’s rich heritage, showcasing the many organizations that work year-round to preserve, interpret, and share the stories that have shaped our communities. This year’s theme, America at 250, explores the ways the Declaration of Independence has shaped our nation and influenced the development of Door County—past and present. Throughout the week of June 15-22, historical societies, museums, cultural organizations, and heritage sites across the county will host special programs, exhibits, tours, and events.

The Kick-Off Event will begin in the Collins Learning Center with a special presentation exploring the importance of preserving Door County’s history and heritage. Guests will also learn about the many History Days programs taking place throughout the week.

Following the presentation, attendees are invited to explore Heritage Village, where representatives from historical and cultural organizations throughout Door County will host informational tables and share opportunities to experience local history firsthand. Visitors can tour the Village’s historic buildings, watch demonstrations at the Blacksmith Shop, try their hand at historic tools in the Madden Tool Museum, and enjoy refreshments.

“History Days is a wonderful opportunity to discover the remarkable organizations that preserve Door County’s unique heritage,” said Amy Frank, Executive Director of the Door County Historical Society. “Whether you are a lifelong resident or a first-time visitor, there is something for everyone. The Kick-Off Event is the perfect place to begin a week of exploration, learning, and appreciation for the people, places, and stories that make Door County special.”

All attendees will receive information about History Days events taking place throughout the week, making it easy to plan a personalized journey through Door County’s past.

The Heritage Alliance of Door County exists to strengthen and enhance local heritage organizations, promote collaboration, and raise public awareness of the important role historic preservation plays in the culture and economy of Door County.
