Journey Beneath Door County: Explore the Peninsula’s Hidden Caves

July 6, 2026 by Laurel Ciohon

Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (July 6, 2026) – The Door County Historical Society invites the community to its next Dine & Discover program on Monday, July 20, featuring local author and explorer Gary Soule, who will present “Exploring Door County Caves.”

The program begins at 6:00 p.m. at the Institute Saloon, 4599 State Highway 57 in Institute. The evening includes a delicious family-style dinner followed by Soule’s fascinating presentation exploring the natural history, geology, and folklore surrounding Door County’s remarkable caves. From sea caves carved into the Niagara Escarpment to lesser-known inland formations, attendees will gain a deeper appreciation for the hidden landscapes that lie beneath the Peninsula’s surface.

An accomplished outdoor writer, photographer, and naturalist, Gary Soule has spent decades exploring Wisconsin’s natural places. His engaging presentations combine scientific knowledge with entertaining stories, stunning photography, and firsthand experiences from years of hiking, paddling, and documenting the region’s unique geology.

“Many people have seen Door County’s cliffs from the water or the shoreline, but few realize the incredible stories hidden within the caves themselves,” said Amy Frank, Executive Director of the Door County Historical Society. “Gary’s passion for the outdoors and his extensive knowledge make this a program you won’t want to miss.”

The Dine & Discover series offers an enjoyable evening of great food, engaging speakers, and opportunities to connect with others who share an interest in Door County’s history, culture, and natural heritage.

The cost is $35 for Door County Historical Society members and $40 for non-members. Advance reservations are required. The cost includes dinner and the program. To register or learn more, visit the Door County Historical Society website or call (920) 421-2332.

The Door County Historical Society is celebrating its 100th anniversary throughout 2026 with special programs, exhibits, and events highlighting a century of preserving and sharing Door County’s rich history. Community members are invited to be part of the celebration by attending programs, becoming members, or contributing to the Society’s Centennial Appeal.
