The Door County Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay will be offering free admission to children 12 and under with an accompanying paid adult Sunday, October 15, 22, and 29. The Door County Maritime Museum offers this opportunity to encourage children to embrace their maritime history and enjoy the interactive exhibits that make learning fun
Children can expect to find interactive, hands-on learning opportunities throughout the museum. The popular Sea Dogs exhibit features four interactive games they can play while learning more about the special role dogs played in our maritime history and heritage. They can explore, historic photographs, videos, interactive games, and other activities to learn about these brave canine companions. This is a wonderful opportunity to explore Sea Dogs before it ends on December 31, 2017 which will then make room for the new exhibit featuring underwater exploration of shipwrecks scheduled to open May 2018.
Another great attraction not to be missed is the authentic periscope removed from the USS Lewis and Clark (SSBN-644). Located in the Peterson Gallery, the fully working periscope allows visitors a full view of the working waterfront and the shipyards nearby. The USS Lewis and Clark (SSBN-644) was a ballistic missile submarine that served the U.S. Navy from 1965 to 1992. The periscope was removed when the sub was decommissioned January 1992. The periscope was donated by the United States Navy and installed into the museum in November 1999.
Among the highlights of a trip to the Door County Maritime Museum is the Elba pilothouse. Pilots of all ages can grab the large ship’s wheel and try to navigate the Elba through the Sturgeon Bay shipping channel and its bridges by means of a realistic computer-driven interactive. Seven video screens simulate a real-time dynamic view from the bridge of the Elba, a historic 400-foot-long freighter.
Special for all ages – visitors in October can also stop by the museum Gift Store where they will find a great selection of nautical gifts, books, and memorabilia. All artwork and notecards will be 15% off the entire month of October.
