Door County, Wis. (September 29, 2025) – The Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) Door County Campus is caring for a 2-month-old kitten who survived a harrowing fall from the Sturgeon Bay Bridge.
Good Samaritans Stephanie Swain and her daughter were driving across the Sturgeon Bay Bridge when they witnessed a 2-month-old kitten darting back and forth, then jumping off the side of the bridge to escape the traffic.
Swain immediately turned her car around and flagged down nearby boaters to try to rescue the terrified kitten. Together, the team was able to find and fish the little one out of the water and bring her to shore. Once on dry land, Swain and her daughter wrapped up the tiny kitten in a sweatshirt and took her home.
“Her body was all limp, couldn’t barely keep her eyes open, and we honestly didn’t think she would make it,” said Swain.
The exhausted kitten got a warm bath, a hearty meal, and some much-deserved sleep on a heated blanket. Swain says her daughter never left the kitten’s side and looked after her non-stop. It didn’t take long for her to have a new name – Splash.
After a few days, the family took her to the WHS Door County Campus. There, the vet team looked over Splash, astonished at how well she was doing. Aside from an upper respiratory infection, she had no broken bones nor signs of pneumonia. She is expected to make a full recovery.
“We’re so grateful and in awe of the heroes who came to rescue tiny Splash,” said Corey Viars, media specialist at WHS. “Without their quick thinking and speedy response, it’s unlikely she would have survived. Our community is so awesome, and this story reminded us of how lucky we are to have such compassionate and kind neighbors.”
