(February 24, 2022) – The DCMM Maritime Speaker Series invites you to a presentation by Tamara Thomsen, Maritime Archaeologist with the Wisconsin Historical Society, during the March 3 presentation at 7 p.m., in the Door County Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay, and online (register below to watch).
Discover Door County’s history hidden beneath the waves with Wisconsin Historical Society’s maritime archaeologist, Tamara Thomsen, during the March Maritime Speaker Series.
Explore shipwrecks along Door County’s scenic shoreline through underwater video, historic photographs, and archaeological discoveries. Hear stories of their tragic losses and learn how to visit, protect, and preserve these time capsules of our maritime past.
Most recently, Thomsen is noted for having found, and assisting in the surfacing of, a 1,200 year old canoe in Lake Mendota in Madison, WI in Fall of 2021.

Tamara Thomsen is a Maritime Archaeologist with Wisconsin Historical Society’s Maritime Preservation and Archaeology program. Her research has resulted in the nomination of fifty-five submerged sites to the National Register of Historic Places. She has received awards from the Association for Great Lakes Maritime History, the Great Lakes Shipwreck Preservation Society, and in 2014, she was inducted into the Women Diver’s Hall of Fame. Tamara is an active cave, rebreather, and technical diving instructor, and has worked as a photographer, researcher, and research diver on projects including the USS Monitor with NOAA National Marine Sanctuaries, and RMS Titanic with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
The DCMM Maritime Speaker Series offers an assortment of monthly programs – from historical topics to current issues affecting the Great Lakes and the economy that relies on them. The Door County Medical Center Maritime Speaker Series programs are held the first Thursday of each month, October through May, beginning at 7pm, on the second floor of the Museum in Sturgeon Bay, as well as online. There is no costs to attend; we suggest donation of a non-perishable food item, or if watching online, we ask you to donate to your local food pantry.
