Door County, Wis. (October 30, 2025) – Wild Ones–Door Peninsula is teaming up with the Door County Invasive Species Team (DCIST) to offer hands-on workshops to the public from 9:00–11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 8, at Woodside Wildflower Preserve, and again on November 22 at Franke Park.
DCIST is a coalition of natural resource professionals and concerned citizens dedicated to preserving Door County’s natural environments. Its mission is “to halt the invasion of exotic, non-native plants by empowering citizens with the education, tools, and skills necessary to control invasive species.” Wild Ones is a national organization that “promotes native landscapes through education, advocacy, and collaborative action.”
Last year, the local Wild Ones chapter adopted these two city parks to help the City of Sturgeon Bay protect valuable native habitats by reducing the spread of invasive plants.
For expert guidance, Wild Ones members reached out to Conservationist Jason Miller of the Door County Soil and Water Conservation Department, who leads DCIST. Both groups encourage property owners and volunteers from environmental organizations to “learn by doing” through these work party–style workshops.
At each session, Jason will begin by teaching participants how to identify buckthorn and will discuss the careful, minimal use of herbicides where appropriate. He will then lead a short hike highlighting the contrast between areas overrun by invasives and those where native species are thriving. Following the hike, participants will learn and practice removal techniques firsthand.
All necessary tools and herbicides will be provided, but volunteers are welcome to bring their own loppers. Please bring work gloves and water.
Woodside Wildflower Preserve is located across the street from Sawyer Elementary School at 60 Willow Drive in Sturgeon Bay. Franke Park is on County Highway U, just west of the Bayview Bridge, at 1700 Clay Banks Road, Sturgeon Bay.
