Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (January 18, 2023) – The Door Peninsula Astronomical Society (DPAS) will hold a Viewing Night Saturday, January 21 starting at 5:30 at the Astronomy Campus, 2022 Utah Street in Sturgeon Bay. If the skies are clear, members of the astronomy society will be outside, using green laser pointers to help visitor identify the winter constellation, while “Ray,” the amazing new 17″ telescope will be creating images of deep sky objects which will be projected on the large flat screen in the Stonecipher Center. If it is overcast, the society will offer fascinating planetarium shows – all free of charge.
The Door Peninsula Astronomical Society is a local club and a chapter of the Astronomical League dedicated to promoting science, public education, and encouraging observation in astronomy. Crossroads at Big Creek is a learning center and nature preserve with the mission of inspiring environmental stewardship.
The two groups just received a grant from the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium for a project called “Making Astronomy Accessible” so in addition to the monthly meetings (held the first Tuesday of each month) and the viewing nights, the two groups are joining forces to “bring the stars within reach.”
With the acquisition of a research grade-telescope, a planetarium with a digital projection systems and a cadre of volunteers, Crossroads and DPAS are in the position to offer an array of astronomical outreach programs for schools, parks, youth groups and the general public.
While they prefer to provide programs at the Astronomy Campus or at Crossroads’ Collins Learning Center, they are able to offer programs in classrooms, libraries and other public meeting places. Funded by Wisconsin Space Grant, they created a brochure listing some of their most popular activities. To pick up a brochure, drop by the Collins Learning Center or write to info@crossroadsatbigcreek.org. Please put “Astronomy” in the subject line.
