The next presentation of the Door County Medical Center Maritime Speaker Series will be held on Thursday, March 5, and will feature DCMM Curator Rhys Kuzdas taking about Built For Battle: Sturgeon Bay Ships in World War Two.
The year 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War Two. As a center of shipbuilding during this tumultuous time, Sturgeon Bay produced hundreds of vessels to supply the demands of the war effort. Digging deeper into the events highlighted in the new Maritime Museum exhibit Built for Battle, this presentation goes into the storied history of those ships. The exhibit brings to life the big stories of bravery, sacrifice and tragedy aboard small ships during great engagements upon the waves. Kuzdas will explore what happened to these vessels after they left their freshwater docks, almost all of which were never to return to the Great Lakes.
The Maritime Speaker Series is held in the Reddin Bridge Room at the Door County Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay, 120 North Madison Avenue. Admission is free of charge with a suggested non-perishable food donation.
