Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (September 28, 2023) – Each Fall, Winter and Spring, the Door County Maritime Museum hosts experts and interesting characters from around the country for the Maritime Speaker Series (presented in partnership with series sponsor the Door County Medical Center). The Maritime Speaker Series offers an assortment of monthly programs – from historical topics to current issues affecting the Great Lakes and the economy that relies on them.
The Door County Medical Center Maritime Speaker Series programs are held the first Thursday of each month, October through May, beginning at 7pm, on the second floor of the Museum in Sturgeon Bay, as well as online. There is no cost to attend; we suggest bringing a donation of a non-perishable food item, or if watching online, we ask you to donate to your local food pantry.
The first presentation of the 2022-2023 Door County Medical Center Maritime Speaker Series will be held both in person and online on Thursday, October 5 at 7pm, featuring Fringe History of the Great Lakes, presented by Jordan Ciesielczyk-Gibson.
Throughout history, the Great Lakes have maintained a rich legacy of blending historical events with superstition and folklore. At first it was to build a bridge between Great Lakes maritime history and global maritime history to illustrate its relevancy. More recently, some of these have been used towards more nefarious ends. Join us as we take a dive into the fringe side of Great Lakes Maritime History. Ghost Ships? Secret wartime missions? Prototype Submarines? Stonehenge in Lake Michigan? A Great Lakes Triangle?
Jordan Ciesielczyk-Gibson is a maritime archaeologist, historian, and author of JaySea Archaeology blog, dedicated to discussing shipwrecks, historic preservation, museum ships, and combatting pseudoscience. Currently working as a maritime archaeologist, Jordan has a decade’s worth of experience as an archaeologist working on land, in both the field and the lab. He’s worked as a museum educator aboard museum ships and was formerly on the board of directors for the Wisconsin Underwater Archaeology Association. Recently featured on CNN and NPR, it’s his goal to share his passion for archaeology, maritime history, and scientific skepticism with the public.
