Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (March 26, 2025) – The Door County Master Gardener Association, in collaboration with Wild Ones-Door Peninsula and Crossroads at Big Creek, announces its Educational Outreach Programs for April. These programs, held at the Collins Learning Center at Crossroads, are free and open to the public.
On April 1 at 6:30 PM, the lecture will be “Integrated Pest Management,” featuring Allen Pyle, a statewide Horticulture Extension Outreach Specialist for UW-Madison based in Green Bay. Pyle will explain how to reduce pest damage in home gardens and landscapes using a research-based approach that focuses on understanding pest life cycles and implementing a combination of control measures. The talk will include details on common garden pests as well as new invasive exotic pests.
Allen’s expertise, built over 30 years of professional horticulture experience, includes herbaceous ornamental perennials, plant propagation, edible plants, native species, and Integrated Pest Management.
As part of their Growing Together Educational Series, on Monday, April 14 at 1:30. Master Gardeners will screen a pre-recorded webinar called “Growing Tomatoes in Wisconsin,” featuring Lisa Johnson, Horticulture Educator for Extension Dane County. She will discuss starting tomatoes from seed, causes of diseases, crop rotation, fertilizing, watering, harvesting, and storage. The webinar will be followed by free treats and an opportunity to socialize.
Charlotte Lukes will be at Crossroads on Tuesday, April 22 at 6:30 PM to present a Special Earth Day Lecture, “Door County Environmental Mentors,” an inspiring look at the history of environmental stewardship on the peninsula.
A mentor herself, Charlotte Lukes is a distinguished naturalist, educator, and writer. Alongside her late husband, Roy Lukes, she has dedicated her life to environmental conservation and education in the region. She has conducted extensive scientific research on the mushrooms of Door County, identifying over 600 species. She continues to teach classes, present programs, and lead nature hikes throughout the region.
