Fish Creek, Wis. (October 23, 2023) – On Saturday, October 28, at 7 p.m., Door Community Auditorium (DCA) will present Memphis & Door County Voices: Sister Rosetta Tharpe & Beyond.
A jaw-dropping lineup of artists will join forces for this tribute to Sister Rosetta Tharpe and the world of blues as a whole. Premiere Memphis vocalists Susan Marshall and Reba Russell will share the stage with Sturgeon Bay’s own blues powerhouse Cathy Grier and Chicago-based/Door County-adopted actor, singer, and writer Lachrisa Grandberry. The foursome will honor the songs and spirit of legendary rock-gospel guitarist and singer Sister Rosetta Tharpe, widely regarded as the godmother of rock and roll. Honoring this legacy and lineage, the vocalists will also share their own original compositions.
Door Community Auditorium—along with musical director Paul Taylor—will bring this “one night only” concert event to the stage with an all-star band featuring Eric Lewis on guitar/steel, John Lewis on guitar/bass, Solomon Lindenerg on organ/piano, Wayne Russell on bass, and Taylor on drums.
Of Tharpe, Rolling Stone wrote, “A queer black woman from Arkansas who shredded on electric guitar, belted praises both to God and secular pleasures, and broke the color line touring with white singers, she was gospel’s first superstar, and she most assuredly rocked.”
The show begins at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 28. Tickets cost $30. Advance tickets are recommended and can be purchased through the DCA box office, located at 3926 Highway 42 in Fish Creek. The box office is open Monday-Friday, 12-5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in person, on the phone at (920) 868-2728, or online at www.dcauditorium.org.
