The Miller Art Museum in downtown Sturgeon Bay announced that it will temporarily close its galleries beginning at 5pm Tuesday, in an effort to mitigate the spread of the rapidly growing novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Although there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Door County according to the Door County Public Health Department as of the time of this writing, the museum’s absolute top priority is the health and well-being of its volunteers, patrons and staff. The museum will remain closed to the public until further notice and all upcoming April events, including the Second Thursday Program Series, LibraryLIVE and opening receptions, have been canceled.
“Our focus right now is to ensure the safety of our community and the prudent thing for us all to do is to heed the recommendations of public health officials, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and the Door County Public Health Department and social distance ourselves” said Elizabeth Meissner Gigstead, executive director. “The latest numbers in Wisconsin—updated just hours ago—indicate a massive spike in confirmed cases throughout the State and, at this point it’s simply a matter of time before we see confirmed cases locally.”
The Miller Art Museum will continue to assess and closely monitor new developments from health officials and will take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of the museum community—volunteers, patrons and staff—and broader Door County community. In the meantime, a virtual tour of the current exhibition, Wade in Water, Into the Field: Paintings by Judi Ekholm, which was scheduled to be on display through Monday, April 6, 2020, will be made available for public viewing in the near future.
New information and updates, when available, will be posted to www.millerartmuseum.org and the Museum’s social media channels: Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. For questions, please contact the Museum’s administrative office, which remains open for the time being, at (920) 746-0707 or email info@millerartmuseum.org.
