On May 11, Write On, Door County hosts a community open house to celebrate those who shaped and inspire us.
Juddville, Wis. (April 15, 2024) – The nonprofit Write On, Door County will host a Mothers & Others Day open house on Saturday, May 11, to celebrate those extraordinary individuals who shaped our lives with love, wisdom, and kindness. This free event welcomes readers and writers of all ages for a day full of creativity, writing, and fun — indoors and out.
The day begins at 10 a.m. with a dedication of Write On’s new Olson Family Memorial Council Ring. The memorial is dedicated to Yvonne Bevry Olson and Jane Anne Perkey, two mothers who inspired a lifelong love of reading and writing in their families — and thus inspired the day’s celebration. The communal outdoor meeting space, designed by Ralph Murre, features seating, a fireplace, and a sculptural pergola which pays homage to the original farmhouse that once stood on the Write On property.
From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., visitors can find:
- Guided hikes along the Writer’s Walk, a winding 1.5-mile path through Write On’s 59 acres of verdant woods. Lined with birches and wildflowers, the path features carved cedar benches, along with the late Door County author Norb Blei’s chicken-coop-turned-writing retreat.
- Creative writing and art projects for children and adults. (Make a Mother’s Day card!)
- Readings by students and local authors in the Olson Family Memorial Council Ring.
- Children’s book read-alouds at the historic Door County Bookmobile (restoration in progress!), with book giveaways.
- Mothers & Others storytelling booth and audio recording center.
- Mauricio’s Mexican food truck.
- Music, “poems while you wait,” and more
