Nature’s Halloween Magic

October 23, 2026 by Laurel Ciohon

The changing season makes late October and early November an ideal time to explore the outdoors and discover some of nature’s most fascinating mysteries. As Halloween approaches, thoughts often turn to magic, folklore, and things that appear a little mysterious. While fairy rings may sound like something from a storybook, these remarkable circles found in lawns, meadows, and forests are very real and offer a glimpse into the hidden world of fungi beneath our feet.

Throughout October, Crossroads at Big Creek invites the community to connect with nature through special programs and self-guided activities.

Winnie-Pooh-Looza, a month-long countywide celebration honoring A.A. Milne’s beloved bear and presented by Friends of Door County Libraries, continues throughout October. As a community partner, Crossroads is bringing a little Hundred Acre Wood magic to the preserve with self-guided activities, indoor and outdoor discoveries, and opportunities for visitors of all ages to enjoy Pooh-inspired adventures while exploring the natural world.

On Wednesday, October 28, at 1:30 p.m., visitors are invited to join a Wandering Wednesday hike. These naturalist-led walks offer an easy and enjoyable way to observe seasonal changes, discover signs of wildlife, and explore the wonders of autumn. Well-behaved dogs are welcome on leash, and registration is not required.

The fascination with fungi continues on Monday, November 2, at 1:30 p.m. during a special Movie Matinee featuring Fantastic Fungi. This visually stunning documentary explores the magical, mysterious, and medicinal world of fungi and their extraordinary role in sustaining life on Earth.

Later that afternoon at 3:15 p.m., children ages 6–12 are invited to attend Crossroads Critter Club: Mysterious Moths. Wisconsin is home to more than 1,000 species of moths, and participants will discover the amazing adaptations and secret lives of these often-overlooked nighttime insects. Advance registration is required due to limited space.

Visitors can continue their exploration throughout November with a self-guided Trail Tales Storybook Walk along Meadow Trail featuring Mushrooms Know: Wisdom from Our Friends the Fungi by Kallie George. Inside the Collins Learning Center, hands-on exploration stations will provide additional opportunities for all ages to learn about mushrooms and the important roles fungi play in nature.

One of the most intriguing fungal phenomena visitors may encounter this season is the fairy ring. Fairy rings can appear as circles of mushrooms, lush green grass, or even rings of brown grass. They form as underground fungal networks called mycelium spread outward from a central point while feeding on decaying leaves, roots, and other organic matter beneath the soil.

As the fungus grows, mushrooms may emerge along the outer edge of the expanding network, creating the circular shapes that have inspired centuries of folklore. Some fairy rings can grow several feet each year, and one famous fairy ring in France stretches nearly half a mile across and is believed to be hundreds of years old.

Beyond their mysterious appearance, fungi are essential to healthy ecosystems. Some form beneficial partnerships with tree roots, helping forests absorb water and nutrients. Others serve as decomposers, breaking down dead organic material and recycling nutrients back into the soil.

This Halloween season, while stories of magic and mystery capture our imaginations, nature offers plenty of real-life wonders of its own. Whether you’re following Pooh’s adventures through the Hundred Acre Wood, searching for mushrooms along the trails, discovering mysterious moths, or spotting a fairy ring in the forest, Crossroads at Big Creek provides countless opportunities to experience the remarkable connections that make the natural world come alive.
