Saturdays are made for art making, viewing and learning at Peninsula School of Art (PenArt). Beginning in September at its campus at 3900 County Road F, Fish Creek, Wisconsin, PenArt will be offering free and low cost programs focused on local families, children, teens and art appreciators, including monthly Family Art Days, monthly teen workshops and a new artist lecture series.
FAMILY ART DAYS
Kids and families are invited to free Family Art Days every third Saturday of the month throughout the 2019-20 school year. Family Art Days are a great opportunity for parents and kids spend time together in a creative atmosphere. Projects are most appropriate for children ages 3 to 12, although family members of all ages can join in the art-making. No registration is required and families can drop in anytime between 9am and noon,
This year’s projects feature a variety of two and three- dimensional art forms, and plenty of opportunities to learn from the art on exhibit in the Guenzel Gallery. According to Catherine Hoke, PenArt’s Executive Director, “It’s amazing to watch different generations – parents, grandparents, and kids, slow down, put away their devices and work alongside each other, learn from one another, and get excited about creating together.” Family Days are supported in part with a grant through the Wisconsin Arts Board. Upcoming Family Art Days include:
- Sept 21: Where Memories Are Made: Collaged Places and Spaces
- Oct 26: Mask Making in conjunction with Fish Creek’s Jack O’Lantern Days
- Nov 16: Wonders of Wax: Encaustic Landscapes
- Dec 14: Animals on the Loose: Drawing and Painting

The 2019-20 Teen Workshop Program connects local teens with working artists through a series of hands-on experiences, each focused on a different medium. Artist mentorship, peer feedback, and technical and conceptual skill building are all part of the program. Workshops are held on select Saturdays through the school year from 9am to 3pm. There are no prerequisites – just an interest in learning new techniques. Tuition is $30 per day and all materials are provided. Teen Workshops are supported in part by the the Kathryn A. Doerr Young Artists Fund of Peninsula School of Art. Upcoming Teen Workshops include:

LECTURE SERIES
Peninsula School of Art’s year-round calendar of exhibitions is always free and open to the public, but this year PenArt is adding additional opportunities for art appreciators to meet and connect with exhibiting artists. On select Saturdays, visiting artists will demonstrate and work with participants during Family Art Days and then present a short lecture on their work and process from 12:15 – 1pm.
The first in the new series will take place on September 21 and feature Anne Toebbe whose work is on display in PenArt’s latest exhibition The Future of Collage. Toebbe is an American contemporary artist who has had solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and at the Monya Rowe Gallery in New York City. Based in Chicago, she is best known for creating meticulously designed collages that depict the interiors of domestic life. Anne will demonstrate her collage techniques and then give a slide lecture following.
Lectures will be announced throughout the winter and additional information on this and other programs can be found at www.PeninsulaSchoolofArt.org.
