Fish Creek, Wis. (May 18, 2023) – Northern Sky Theater is pleased to announce the 2023 recipient of the Northern Sky Werner & Sue Krause Scholarship. This scholarship is available to students pursuing a degree in theater or music performance who exhibit a love for theater or music performance and have participated in the performing arts throughout high school.
This year’s recipient of a $2500 scholarship is Hunter Malvitz. Hunter is a graduate of Southern Door High School and will attend the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire this fall, majoring in Music Education, with his sights set on teaching others how the performing arts can awaken and transform lives.
Recipients of the Northern Sky Werner & Sue Krause Scholarship are selected based on their participation in the performing arts while in high school, as well as their GPA and other criteria.
As patrons of performing arts organizations throughout the state, Werner and Sue Krause have long supported the performing arts and the joy they bring to audiences young and old. Sue passed away in 2021 leaving Werner to carry on the tradition.
In 2022, Werner expanded the scholarship opportunity to allow past recipients to reapply in their second, third, and fourth years of college, provided they are still pursuing a degree in the performing arts.
The recipients of these awards in 2023 include Lexie Henkel, who is in her third year at Lawrence University majoring in Physics and Vocal Performance, and Lia Smith Redman, who is in her fourth year at UW-Milwaukee majoring in Dance and English. These students received scholarships of $4,000 and $5,000, respectively. The scholarships are administered by the Door County Community Foundation.
“The performing arts play an integral role in the economic success of Door County,” stated Northern Sky managing director Dave Maier. “We have always fostered the education of new artists through our workshop process and intern program. This generous scholarship from the Krause’s allows us to recognize the achievements of those students who are pursuing a future in one of the most important drivers of the tourism industry.”
The mission of Northern Sky Theater is to create, develop and present professional musical and dramatic productions that will further the knowledge and appreciation of the culture and heritage of the United States.
