Fish Creek, Wis. (June 23, 2020) – Northern Sky Theater is pleased to announce the 2020 winners of the Werner and Sue Krause Scholarship. The Northern Sky Theater Werner & Sue Krause Scholarship is available to Door County students pursuing a degree in theater or music performance who exhibit a love for theater or music performance and who have participated in the performing arts throughout high school.
This year’s recipients of a $2,500 scholarship are Mya Ploor and Lia Redmann.
Mya is a graduate of Sevastopol High School and will be studying at Luther College in the fall. She has participated in extra-curricular activities all through high school and has learned to play over 20 instruments along with being active in volleyball. Mya developed a passion for teaching when she was asked to help younger students by both her band and chorus directors. Long term she hopes to earn her doctorate to teach at the college level as well as perform in an orchestra. Her long-long-term goal is a Broadway pit orchestra in New York City.
Lia was home schooled and participated in programs at Gibraltar. She will be attending Madison Area Technical College in the fall. As a result of growing up in Door County surrounded by the performing arts, Lia has had the opportunity to explore and develop her skills and interests in many areas of performing arts. She has found her purpose in playwriting which allows her to be involved in all aspects of the theater from development to performance. Her interest in performing and improving her own skills in singing, acting, dance and writing has led her to see theater as a way to tell a story that can create discussion and change in the world.
Recipients are selected based on their participation in the performing arts while in high school as well as their GPA and other criteria.
As patrons of performing arts organizations throughout the state, Werner and Sue are aware of the joy that live theater and music performances bring to audiences young and old. It’s something Northern Sky has been doing for 50 years.
“The performing arts play an integral role in the economic success of Door County,” stated Managing Director, Dave Maier. “We have always fostered the education of new artists through our workshop process and intern program. This generous scholarship allows us to recognize the achievements of those students who are pursuing a future in one of the most important economic drivers of the tourism industry.”
The mission of Northern Sky Theater is to create, develop and present professional musical and dramatic productions that will further the knowledge and appreciation of the culture and heritage of the United States.
