Deadline for Nominations is May 15, 2025
Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (March 14, 2025) – Open Door Pride is accepting nominations through May 15 for the annual Sandy Brown Award. The award celebrates people and organizations who have made Door County a more welcoming place for all to live and visit and who have made significant contributions to LGBTQIA+ and allied communities throughout the county. The award is presented at the Open Door Pride Festival, held annually on the last Saturday in June, in Sturgeon Bay’s Martin Park. This year’s Festival date is Saturday, June 28.
The Sandy Brown Award has been given at the Festival since 2018. The first award was given to and named for Sandy Brown, who created the Door County chapter of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) in 1997. Brown has worked tirelessly advocating for the LGBTQIA+ community.
This year, a committee comprised of past recipients of the award will review the nominations and select the honoree. In addition to Brown, past recipients include the Diversity Acceptance Alliance Club at Gibraltar Schools, Third Avenue PlayWorks, Write On, Door County, the City of Sturgeon Bay, Sevastopol School’s Straight and Gay Alliance, and Hope United Church of Christ.
To nominate an individual, group, organization, or business for the award or to find out more information about Open Door Pride, visit opendoorpride.org. Deadline for submitting a nomination is Thursday May 15.
Each year a Door County artist is selected to design the award. This year’s artist is Renee Schwaller of Off The Wheel Pottery.
Open Door Pride’s mission is to affirm diversity in Door County through inclusion for all. We are a 100% volunteer organization representing the LGBTQIA+ and ally communities in Door County!
