Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (October 3, 2022) – Third Avenue Playworks has undergone a renaissance of sorts between the renovation of the theater building and some change in management and mission in the last year. One thing that has not changed is the quality and breadth of theater experience. Artistic Director Jacob Janssen and Jillaine Seefeldt, Development Director, met in early spring of this year to talk about a new kind of collaboration and Janssen described his vision of collaboration with the community at large.
They have 5 shows for their season and each show draws in a community group or 2 that would serve several purposes. First, the chosen non-profit organization has a connection in some way to the story line of the play. Second, Tap’s publicized collaboration would give additional visibility to the non-profit and third, the non-profit would also have the chance to present information to the theater goers.
Play 4 of Tap’s season is called Birds of North America by Anna Ouyang Moench and Open Door Bird Sanctuary is the collaborative partner. This is really a wonderful chance to cross pollinate audiences of birds and of the theater. A really wonderful chance for you to discover a gem in Sturgeon Bay and for ODBS to educate and inspire more folks with their amazing Birds of Prey. Actually, you have the chance to enjoy TAP and discover ODBS at the Pay-What-You-Will performance on Sunday October 2. Open Door will be having a Meet n Greet right in the lobby with a couple of the ODBS resident raptors. This will really give you the chance to know firsthand who you are helping by attending and “paying” for the performance and to truly have a sense of birds as you experience the show.
Below is a synopsis of the show and they both hope you will check it out:
At the Pay-What-You-Will performance Sunday October 2, all donations received will be given to Open Door Bird Sanctuary with a Meet n Greet starting at 1pm in the TAP lobby.

John and his daughter Caitlyn are birders. As they scan the skies over their backyard in suburban Maryland looking for elusive birds, years go by. Relationships begin and end. Children grow up and parents age. The climate and the world change in small and vast ways. BIRDS OF NORTH AMERICA takes a close look at the relationship of a father and daughter over the course of a decade as they struggle to understand the parts of one another that defy understanding.
Open Door Bird Sanctuary (opendoorbirdsanctuary.org), established is in its 11th year of inspiring Door County residents and tourists with 19 birds of prey, including eagles, owls, hawks, falcons and a turkey vulture. Open Door’s 33-acre property on County Road I just west of Hwy 57, is open Saturdays during the summer and by private tour 6-7 days/week all year round.
