Fish Creek, Wis. (August 29, 2025) – The Door County Historical Society is pleased to report significant progress at Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, where restoration efforts are moving forward step by step thanks to the dedication of volunteers, contractors, and community partners.
Since late July, a wide variety of improvements have taken place at the Lighthouse and surrounding grounds:
- Barn and Summer Kitchen Work
Window sash painting, electrical outlet preparation, and the installation of new double doors on the barn’s east entrance have been completed. The barn siding was also finished and trim added. The Duclon family’s historic kitchen cook stove—manufactured by Neenah Stove Works—was moved into the summer kitchen from the Hanson House at Crossroads. While it needs restoration before use, the piece adds to the authenticity of the site. - Flooring and Interior Projects
Taylor’s Hardwood Floors is scheduled to refinish floors in both the hayloft and the lighthouse later this month. The kitchen floor will be sanded and sealed, while the other floors will be buffed and finished to retain their historic character. Miscellaneous stair and floor repairs are also planned. - National Restoration Projects
Crews returned in mid-August to paint the lighthouse tower steps and hand railing, remove lower window sashes for historical restoration into divided-light windows, and install new spires on the privy, returning it to its historic appearance. Temporary Plexiglas and screened inserts were placed in the window openings to allow ventilation until the sashes are returned and reinstalled. - Sidewalks, Grading, and Site Work
Colosimo’s Construction removed old sidewalks and poured new concrete paths, enhancing both safety and appearance. River rock borders are being installed around the lighthouse and nearby buildings with treated wood edging to direct water away from the foundation. Grading has been completed, grass seed will soon be planted, and the site is reopening to visitors. The stamped concrete barn ramp received two coats of antique sealer, preserving its new look. - Unexpected Discoveries
While preparing the foundation for the river rock border, volunteers uncovered loose stones at the base of the lighthouse tower. National Restoration will evaluate and address this issue to ensure long-term stability.
“Every week brings visible progress,” said Amy Frank, Executive Director of the Door County Historical Society. “From the installation of new sidewalks to the careful refinishing of historic windows, each step moves us closer to a fully restored Eagle Bluff Lighthouse. This work is only possible because of the generosity of donors, the skill of professionals, and the dedication of volunteers.”
The Eagle Bluff Lighthouse restoration is part of the Society’s ongoing campaign to raise $2 million for preservation and education. Donations play a critical role in ensuring this historic site continues to inspire future generations.
