Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (January 23, 2024) – Quantum Technologies, in partnership with the Washington Island Electric Cooperative, is proud to announce the successful completion of Phase 1 of the Washington Island fiber optic internet project. This milestone marks a significant step towards providing reliable high-speed internet access to the residents of Washington Island.
“Having the residents of Washington Island connected on the best, newest, and fastest fiber connection available in the county is an incredible feeling,” said Erin Helgeson, Quantum Technologies vice president.
The project, initiated in April 2021, is a 5-phase endeavor that aims to connect the entire island to a state-of-the-art fiber optic network by 2027. In Phase 1, Quantum Technologies focused on connecting vital “anchor” institutions such as the police station, school, town hall, and visitor center. This achievement lays the foundation for subsequent phases, during which approximately 225 homes per year will be connected. This year Quantum Technologies performed ahead of schedule, connecting 300 homes to high speed internet.
“It always seems impossible until it’s done,” said Clinton Tripplett, lead fiber technician on the island. “But it’s a great feeling to do something that really matters.”
Washington Island is now transitioning from having some of the poorest internet service in Door County to possessing the newest, fastest, and most reliable network in Northeastern Wisconsin. Quantum Technologies and the Washington Island Electric Cooperative are excited to continue working together to bring this essential service to the entire community.
“They have endured ‘the worst’ internet for far too long,” said Helgeson. “We look forward to working with each of them, and teaching them what they are capable of doing with a high-speed internet connection.”
