Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (January 6, 2024) — The Door County Historical Society held its 2024 Annual Meeting of the Membership on November 25, 2024 where Rolf Olson was named the DCHS Volunteer of the Year.
Since 2014, Rolf Olson has been a cornerstone of Heritage Village, sharing his incredible talent as a blacksmith. Whether he’s forging iron into tools or telling the stories behind his craft, Rolf creates a truly unforgettable experience for all who visit. His blacksmith demonstrations never fail to attract a crowd, drawing both young and old to marvel at the skill, artistry, and history he so generously shares.
Rolf’s dedication extends far beyond the forge. He gives his time freely and enthusiastically, ensuring our mission to preserve and share Door County’s history remains strong. His passion for his craft and his commitment to educating others embody the spirit of volunteerism.
The following comments were read at the Annual Meeting:
“I am honored to make mention of some of the reasons that Rolf deserves to be the DCHS Volunteer of the Year. Always wanting to be in the forge at Heritage Village and show the trade to others is quite enough in my view. But, doing so with wit and wisdom peppered in to keep attendees interested certainly adds more. Cheers to Door County’s #1 Ambassador of Blacksmithing.” (James Viste)
“The blacksmith works in the summer when it is really hot, in the fall when the leaves start to fall, and continues until the water freezes in the dipping bucket. Hot, cold, rain, or shine, a person coming to the forge might see smoke coming out of the chimney and hear the sound of the irregular tapping on the anvil. Students from home schooling classes, grandmas, children with special needs, large families, women having a ladies weekend, and men old and young enjoy watching Rolly’s concentration on the steel and listening to his banter as he patiently hammers away. The audience becomes transfixed as he starts to explain what he is doing and taking the time to answer their questions– no matter what they ask.” (Carol Olson)
“Rolf Olson is one of those rare types of men who can do it all, from blacksmithing and woodworking, to boatbuilding, photography, and even poetry. He’s always been someone who is eager to help people, whether it’s volunteering for the historical society for years blacksmithing in the village, to building houses, and coaching soccer. He is always looking to make people smile, from his scary accurate accents to his terribly funny (and occasionally painful) puns. He has been one of my biggest role models throughout my own life as well, teaching and guiding me. He has been the best dad one could ask for.” (Colin Pustaver-Olson)
Please join the Door County Historical Society in congratulating and thanking Rolf Olson, the 2024 Volunteer of the Year. His contributions have enriched our organization and inspired countless visitors. Thank you!
