Southern Door, Wis. (June 14, 2022) – The Southern Door County School District is proud to announce that a familiar face will be returning to the district as elementary principal starting July 1. At a Board of Education Special Meeting on June 8th, former teacher and alumnus, Marc Vandenhouten, was named the new Southern Door Elementary principal. Mr. Vandenhouten was selected from a pool of 34 candidates. This spring, the elementary principal position became available when Cory Vandertie resigned for family reasons after serving as principal since 2017.
Mr. Vandenhouten returns to Southern Door with five years of administrative experience after serving as elementary 3K-4 principal of Little Chute Elementary and 3K-6 principal of St. Mary’s (Luxemburg) and Holy Trinity (Casco).
Before beginning his administrative career, Mr. Vandenhouten served as an elementary teacher at Southern Door, spending five years teaching fifth grade and one-year teaching third grade. In addition to being a classroom teacher, Mr. Vandenhouten was involved in numerous district programs, grants, new initiatives, and coached at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Mr. Vandenhouten also spent a year teaching fourth grade in Kewaunee.
Mr. Vandenhouten earned his bachelor’s degree in Elementary/Middle School Education from UW-Oshkosh, and a master’s degree in Educational Technology from Marian University in Fond du Lac. He continued his education by earning his principal licensure from Viterbo University in La Crosse, and then returned to Marian University for his Curriculum and Instruction licensure.
“I am honored to have been selected to serve the Southern Door Community as elementary principal,” Mr. Vandenhouten said. “This is a special place for my family and me that we’re proud to call home. I’m excited to get to know every student personally, and to start working collaboratively with our school staff, families, and community partners.”
Mr. Vandenhouten, his wife Sarah, and their three children, McCoy, Olivia, and Chloe, are in the process of moving to Southern Door. In his free time, Marc enjoys watching Wisconsin and high school sports, running, spending time in the woods during the fall, and helping drive tractors on his parents’ farm in Brussels. We are excited to welcome Marc and his family back to Southern Door!
