Big Band Jazz, Session I, is in full swing at Birch Creek with faculty and students performing on the Stage of Stars in the Dutton Concert Barn four nights each week through August 10. The program each night includes songs by the legends of the Big Band Jazz era including Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Billy Strayhorn and Jelly Roll Morton. Audiences are treated to top hits from the Great American Songbook such as “Mack the Knife,”“Blues in the Night,” “Corner Pocket,” “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore” and many more.
Big Band Jazz concerts at Birch Creek are a truly unique opportunity to see big-time jazz talent who come to Door County each summer from across the country to perform 16 concerts and blow the roof off of the concert barn. Not literally of course. It’s just that good.
All-time favorite performers also return for concerts with the Birch Creek Jazz Orchestra from July 17-27 with Katie Ernst (Vocals – Jazz I) and from July 31-August 10 with Mardra Thomas (Vocals – Jazz II) and Reggie Thomas (Piano – Jazz II).
These same faculty performing artists spend each day teaching advanced music students the art of musicianship and prepare them for a minimum of 10 live performances in front of concert audiences and at outreach events around the county.
Concerts begin at 7:30 PM, with pre-concert music under The Jackie & Steve Kane Gazebo at 7:00 PM. Tickets may be purchased online at birchcreek.org/tickets or by calling (920) 868-3763. Birch Creek’s box office is open from 9:00 AM – 8:00 PM on concert nights and from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM on Monday-Tuesday.
