Egg Harbor, Wis. (July 19, 2021) – Big Band Jazz, Session I, is in full swing at Birch Creek with faculty and students performing on the outdoor stage in front of the Dutton Concert Barn four nights each week through August 7th. The program each night includes songs by the legends of the Big Band Jazz era including Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Billy Strayhorn and Jelly Roll Morton. Audiences are treated to top hits from the Great American Songbook such as “Mack the Knife,” “Blues in the Night,” “Corner Pocket,” “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore” and many more.
Big Band Jazz concerts at Birch Creek are a truly unique opportunity to see world class jazz talent who come to Door County each summer from bands, orchestras and universities across the United States and perform at 16 public concerts on the Birch Creek campus. Jeff Campbell, Birch Creek Jazz Sessions Program Director, returns to lead the students, faculty and Birch Creek Jazz Orchestra for two, two-week sessions at the academy for dedicated young musicians from ages 13-19.
All-time favorite performers also return for concerts with the Birch Creek Jazz Orchestra from July 14-24 with Katie Ernst (Vocals – Jazz I) and from July 28-August 7 with Mardra Thomas (Vocals – Jazz II) and Reggie Thomas (Piano – Jazz II).
These same faculty performing artists spend each day teaching advanced music students the art of musicianship and prepare them for a minimum of 10 live performances in front of concert audiences and at outreach events around the county.
Concerts begin at 7pm, with pre-concert music under the Jackie & Steve Kane Gazebo at 6:30pm. Tickets may be purchased online at birchcreek.org/tickets or by calling (920) 868-3763. Birch Creek’s box office is open from 9am–7:30pm on concert nights and from 9am–5pm on Monday–Tuesday.
