By Visit Fish Creek
There are plenty of reasons to head to Fish Creek this summer—plenty of fantastic views (summer sunsets really ARE the best), great food (everything you can possibly think of, and don’t forget those fish boils!), awesome shopping (our shops are getting ready for the busy season as we speak!), and so many places to stay.
For the sake of this month’s visitor newsletter, however, we’re honing in on something that truly makes Fish Creek special: all the incredible music and theater that abounds in our little town.
Not only do we have a Concerts in the Park series like many of our fellow Door County communities, but we’re also home to Peninsula Players Theater, Northern Sky Theater, and Door Community Auditorium. And, with Egg Harbor’s Birch Creek Music Performance Center being mere minutes away, you could schedule a music- or theater-related activity for yourself every night for two weeks and not see the same thing twice.
With that, we thought we’d give a little “music and performance” preview for the months ahead. There’s so much going on (including a brand-new music event—more on that below!) and we want you to have ALL the info.
Door Community Auditorium: 2024 Season Annoucement Coming on Friday, April 26
There are a few important days that Door County residents and visitors alike mark their calendars for. One of them is when Door Community Auditorium (DCA) announces their upcoming season. This year, DCA’s announcement is coming on Friday, April 26.
Do we have any sneak peeks or previews? No way—DCA keeps those secrets pretty well, and that’s part of the allure! So, we’ll just say that if you want to get the details ASAP, you should bookmark DCA’s website or their social media channels and make sure you’re tuned in next Friday.
In the meantime, we’d like to remind you that there are big-time talented artists that make their way to our little town every summer and fall to play the DCA stage. To celebrate the DCA’s 33rd anniversary, the Peninsula Pulse recently highlighted 33 of those artists that are part of the Auditorium’s history since opening in 1991. Check it out here!
Northern Sky Theater: Tickets On Sale for the 2024 Indoor & Outdoor Season
Northern Sky Theater will kick off its season on Wednesday, June 12. It will present three shows outdoors in Peninsula State Park during the summer: Belgians in Heaven (the 30th-anniversary production of Northern Sky’s iconic musical comedy), Hell’s Belgians (a world premiere prequel to Belgians in Heaven), and The Fisherman’s Daughters (back from its preview production in 2021).
Indoors for the summer at the Gould Theater, the company will premiere Girls on Sand (think Guys on Ice, but with gals on a beach). Indoors at the Gould for the fall will be the premiere of Reality Trip (a contemporary musical about how technology helps and hinders us). The season will close out at the Gould with And If Elected (Northern Sky’s “fan favorite” election year tradition).
The three summer shows at the Park will run in repertory six nights a week, including two double show nights on Mondays and Thursdays. The summer show in the Gould will also run six nights a week. The fall indoor shows will run six nights a week in September and October. Tickets are on sale, so make sure you grab tickets for the time you’ll be here!
Peninsula Players Theater: The 89th Season of “Theater in a Garden” Begins June 18
Tickets are also on sale for the 89th season of the Peninsula Players (!!!). Pen Players will perform five plays during its season, which will take place from June 18 through October 20. The season kicks off with I Ought to Be in Pictures, a comedy by Neil Simon, before transitioning to Angel Next Door, a new comedy by Paul Slade Smith. The play follows a mansion full of playwrights, actors, and a starstruck young writer trying to create a show (as well as a housekeeper who wants them all to leave).
The season continues with the hit Broadway musical Million Dollar Quartet, inspired by the twist of fate that brought Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis together for an incredible jam session at Sun Records studio. Next up is Mary’s Wedding, the award-winning play follows two lovers who stay connected through letters and dreams, searching for a place where the war that separated them can’t find them. Then, the season comes to a close with The Stranger, a recently-discovered psychological thriller by Agatha Christie. Make sure to get your tickets here.
Birch Creek Music Performance Center: 2024 Season Opens June 20
If you’ve never been to the Dutton Concert Barn, this summer is the summer to change that. Birch Creek’s 2024 summer concert series, as always, will feature performances by advanced students and faculty musicians. They study and teach by day and perform by night in the historic concert barn.
Birch Creek starts their season with “Performance at the Disco: I Just Want to Celebrate the 70s!”, a percussion, steel pan, and world music concert. Six more percussion, steel pan, and world music concerts follow in June, featuring a range of styles including Caribbean grooves, percussive jazz, and original compositions. The Center switches to their Symphony Session concerts in July, which feature an 85+ piece full symphony orchestra.
The season ends with the powerful and mesmerizing sounds of Big Band Jazz, where over 16 evenings, concertgoers will be transported back to the golden age of jazz with the timeless sounds of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Glenn Miller, and more. For more information and tickets, head here.
Fish Creek’s Music Line-Up: Concerts in the Park (and the Beach!)
In addition to all the opportunities for music and theater performances in Fish Creek, we also have several opportunities for you to hear some great tunes right here in town. The schedule for our weekly Tuesday Concerts in the Park series in Noble Square has been set, with a blend of favorite and brand-new musicians. Those concerts are held from 4-6 pm starting Tuesday, June 18, so make sure to pack your blankets and lawn chairs to take to the shows! Check out the schedule here.
And, if you’ve read this far, you get a surprise: we’ve also been planning a new Fish Creek music event, this time at Fish Creek Beach! Called Fish Fri (get it?!?), these monthly concerts are held on Friday nights from 5-7 pm and are a great way for you to hang with family and friends, have a picnic dinner, and set the scene for an awesome weekend in Door County. More information on these concerts will be in our May newsletters, but in the meantime, mark your calendars for the first concert on Memorial Day Friday (Friday, May 24!).
