Baileys Harbor, Wis. (February 16, 2026) — Late winter in Door County brings one of nature’s most magical experiences: the calls of owls echoing through the forest at dusk. Great horned, barred, saw-whet, eastern screech, and occasionally snowy owls are especially active this time of year, offering a unique chance to hear — and maybe even spot — these fascinating nighttime hunters. As important predators in Wisconsin’s ecosystems, owls help keep nature in balance. However, changes in climate are affecting their habitats, food sources, and nesting areas. Learning about these remarkable birds is an important first step in helping protect them.
To celebrate these mysterious birds and inspire environmental stewardship in all ages, The Ridges Sanctuary will host its annual Owl-O-Rama on March 6–7. This two-day program will feature stunning photography, an engaging presentation and guided hike, a nest box building activity, and an opportunity to see live owls while learning how to support local owl populations. Events are:
Artist Reception, Friday, March 6, 4:00-6:00 pm: This featured exhibit in the Cook-Albert Fuller Nature Center displays the works ofbird photographer Tony Chapa. His pieces meticulously capture 9 of the 11 species of owls in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Tony’s creations are a culmination of five years of post-retirement, resurrecting a lifelong love of photography. Fee:Free program. Donations are appreciated.
Owl Prowl, Friday, March 6, 6:00-8:30 pm: The event will begin with a presentation at the Nature Center on owl species that call Door County home. Following the presentation, participants will head out on a trail to hear them calling to one another. Fee: Public $15, Members receive a 20% discount.
Eastern Screech Owl Nest Box Workshop, Saturday, March 7, 12:30-1:30 pm: Participants will meet at the Ridges Workshop to build eastern screech owl nest boxes to take home to hang and invite owls to move into their backyards. A Ridges staff member will provide the materials needed to assemble owl nest boxes and provide guidance. Fee: Public $50, Members receive a 20% discount.
Meet & Greet with Open Door Bird Sanctuary, Saturday, March 7, 1:00-3:00 pm: This free event takes place at the Nature Center and is staffed by Open Door Bird Sanctuary who offer an up close and personal chance to see live birds.
Also on Saturday, beginning at 10:00 am, Master Taxidermist Mike Orthober will be in the Nature Center exhibit space for a taxidermy demonstration, offering observers a chance to watch him work, ask questions, and learn all about the taxidermy process.
