Family-Friendly Event Creates Awareness about Door County Owls
Baileys Harbor, Wis. (February 9, 2024) – March is prime time to hear the calls, and for those who are lucky, see owls in Door County. Owl species found in the area include Great Horned, Barred, Saw-Whet, Eastern Screech, and infrequently, Snowy Owls. To raise awareness in the community on how to protect Wisconsin’s owl species, The Ridges Sanctuary will host its annual Owl-O-Rama on March 1st and 2nd.
“Owls are an indicator species which means if they’re present, you’re doing a good job providing habitat for them and other animals,” says Jane Whitney, Ridges Sanctuary Naturalist. “By educating the public about owls, we hope that people will make a personal connection to these magnificent hunters and commit to helping protect the ecosystems which the owls need to thrive.”
The Owl Prowl will be held on Friday, March 1st from 6:00-8:30 pm. The event begins with a presentation at the Nature Center by Jane Whitney on owl species that call Door County home. Following the presentation, participants will head down to the Ridges Logan Creek Property and out on the trail to hear them calling to one another. Travel to Logan Creek is necessary and carpooling will be available. Fee: Public $15, Member $12, 16 & under $7
An Eastern Screech Owl Nest Box Workshop will take place on Saturday, March 2nd, from 12:30-1:30 pm. Participants will meet at the Ridges Workshop to build Eastern Screech Owl nest boxes to take home to hang and invite owls to move into their backyards. A Ridges staff member will provide all the materials needed to assemble owl nest boxes and provide guidance. Fee: Public $45, Member $40
A Meet & Greet with Open Door Bird Sanctuary with birds of prey will take place on Saturday, March 2nd from 1:00-3:00 pm: This free event takes place at the Nature Center and is staffed by Open Door Bird Sanctuary who offer an up close and personal chance to see live birds.
