Capture the different shapes and sizes of Newport’s leaves through the magic of cyanotype printing! Experiment creating sun prints using leaves collected from around the park while learning how and why trees change colors in the fall. Meet outside the park office, Lot 1.

Nature Journaling: Sketching Skeletons
Join Park staff and try your hand at Nature journaling…this time with bones! This is an activity designed for everyone, no matter your skill level. Learn about animal skeletons and bones while sketching some specimens. Materials provided. Come with an open mind, an adventurous heart and a willingness to connect with nature! Find out more »Earth Science Week – Story in the Rocks: Let’s Talk Fossils Drop-in Program
We will be exploring fossil evidence in the rocks found at Newport. Newport is a great place to find Silurian-era fossils, such as honeycomb coral, brachiopods, and crinoids, which are remnants of a shallow tropical sea that once covered the area over 400 million years ago. (Wisconsin was located then at 20 degrees South latitude, below the equator.) Meet at the office building, Lot 1.

Autumn is a busy time for Newport’s critters as they prepare to cozy in for the approaching cold and dark winter months. Join park naturalists on a hike of the 1.2-mile Fern Trail to learn about some of the special winter adaptations wildlife possess while keeping an eye out for signs of animals preparing for winter. Meet at Lot 3.

Join the park manager on this night hike. We’ll let our eyes adjust to the moonlight and hike the 1.75-mile Monarch Trail, watching and listening for the sights and sounds of the night. If needed, bring a flashlight or head lamp with a red lens. Meet at the office building, Lot 1. In case of rain, program will be cancelled.

Join WI Bat Ambassadors and Newport State Park to help us celebrate bats for Bat Week! Participate in hands-on activities and learn how bats help us in our own backyards. Bat Week is an annual, international celebration of the role of bats in nature, and is designed to raise awareness about the need for bat conservation. Meets in the Nature Center, Lot 1.
