Wisconsin’s Green Tier Legacy Communities Program

February 22, 2021 by Laurel Ciohon

Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (February 22, 2021) – What is Wisconsin’s Green Tier Legacy Communities program, and why should we want to know? Green Tier Legacy Communities is a forward-looking, cost-saving approach to good environmental management and sustainability, offered by Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources since 2010. Egg Harbor, Ephraim, the Town of Gibraltar and Door County are all Green Tier participants. Other county communities are exploring the program’s advantages with a view to signing up.

Join the Climate Change Coalition of Door County at 7 pm Wednesday, March 10, for a virtual discussion of this innovative program and the benefits it offers participants. Our speakers will be:

• Laurel Sukup, chief of Sustainability and Business Support for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, who works with businesses and local governments to help them achieve their sustainability goals. Sukup holds degrees in geology and public policy from the University of Wisconsin.

• Ryan Heise, until recently village administrator in Egg Harbor, a Green Tier leader in Door County, and now city manager in Saugatuck, Michigan. Before moving to Egg Harbor, Heise was director of operations for Florida’s Lakewood Ranch, reportedly the largest green development in the United
States. Heise has an undergraduate degree in urban planning from Western Michigan University and a master’s in public administration from the University of South Dakota.

Green Tier is dedicated to helping businesses and communities move beyond minimum compliance to good environmental practices and — importantly — to maximize their resources. By improving their environmental performance, Green Tier participants effect substantial savings. For businesses, Green Tier can improve the bottom line. For communities, it can deliver more efficient public services at lower cost.

The program is free and open to the public, though registration is required. To register, go to https://www.climatechangedoorcounty.com/upcoming-events/wisconsins-green-tier-legacy-communities. A registration button will direct you to the Eventbrite registration page.
