Door County Historical Society Celebrates 100 Years of Preserving and Sharing Local History

February 16, 2026 by Laurel Ciohon

Sturgeon Bay, Wis. (February 16, 2026) — The Door County Historical Society (DCHS) proudly celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, marking a century of collecting, preserving, and sharing the rich history and heritage of Door County. This milestone honors the dedication of generations of volunteers, members, donors, and community partners who have ensured that local stories continue to be preserved and shared.

Founded in 1926

On October 1, 1926, Hjalmar R. Holand and a group of citizens met at the County Courthouse to form a historical society dedicated to preserving local history. From the beginning, the organization was rooted in community engagement.

Early members gathered for dinner meetings at restaurants throughout the county, featuring speakers who shared research and stories from Door County’s past. That tradition of learning and connection continues today through DCHS’s popular Dine & Discover series, which brings people together in welcoming settings across the county.

A Century of Growth and Preservation

Over the decades, the organization has grown from a small volunteer effort into a trusted steward of Door County’s historic places and collections. Today, DCHS owns and manages significant historic sites including Eagle Bluff Light Station and Heritage Village and offers educational programs, exhibits, and special events that serve both residents and visitors.

Throughout its first century, the Society has achieved many important milestones, including:

  • Identifying and marking nearly 40 historic sites across the county, including the totem pole in Peninsula State Park, the Robert LaSalle Memorial, Tornado Park Memorial, and many others.
  • Advocating for and supporting the formation of a county park commission.
  • Publishing books and magazines that share stories of Door County’s past.
  • Advocating, fundraising, and supporting the creation of the Door County Museum.
  • Restoring the abandoned Eagle Bluff Light Station in the early 1960s, making it the first lighthouse on the Great Lakes to open as a museum.
  • Partnering with Sturgeon Bay School District on the creation of Crossroads at Big Creek, including a historic village of original and reconstructed buildings representing life in Door County after the Civil War and before World War I.
  • Restoring the Hansen House, one of the few remaining examples of Norwegian log building technique.
  • Completing a comprehensive restoration of Eagle Bluff Light Station in 2026, including reconstruction of the original barn and summer kitchen.

Planning for the Next Century

While this anniversary is a time to reflect, it is also a time to look ahead. In 2025, the Board of Directors engaged in a strategic planning process to guide the organization into its next century. The plan establishes priorities for preservation, education, financial sustainability, and community engagement, ensuring that DCHS remains strong and accessible for future generations.

“Reaching 100 years is both a celebration and a responsibility,” said Amy Frank, Executive Director. “We are honoring the legacy of those who came before us while intentionally planning for the future of history preservation and education in Door County.”

Centennial Events and Community Celebration

Centennial activities throughout the year will include a Pioneer Day at Heritage Village, a Grand Opening Celebration at Eagle Bluff Light Station, and a Birthday Celebration on October 1—the exact date the Society was established. Additional history-based projects in collaboration with Door County schools and partner organizations will provide opportunities for the community to celebrate and participate.

Invite Us to Present to Your Group

As part of this Centennial year, the Door County Historical Society is offering presentations to local organizations, service clubs, and boards. These presentations share the history of DCHS, highlight major milestones from the past 100 years and outline plans and priorities for the next century.

Groups interested in scheduling a presentation may contact Amy Frank at office@doorcountyhistoricalsociety.org to arrange a date.

Ways to Get Involved

Community participation has always driven the Society’s success. During this Centennial year, residents and supporters are invited to take part in several special initiatives:

  • Assist with research focused on documenting the Society’s first 100 years
  • Nominate long-time residents for the Multigenerational History Project, recognizing families and individuals whose stories span generations in Door County.
  • Contribute ideas and materials for inclusion in a Centennial time capsule.
  • Support the Centennial Appeal with a gift of $100 or $1,000. All Centennial donors will receive a commemorative pin or coin in recognition of their support.

Additional participation opportunities will be announced throughout the year. A special page at www.doorcountyhistoricalsociety.org will contain pertinent information and ways to participate.

Supporting the Next 100 Years

The Door County Historical Society’s continued work—and its ability to grow—depends on community support. Donations play a critical role in preserving historic sites, expanding educational programming, and strengthening the organization for its second century.

As it begins its next 100 years, the Door County Historical Society remains committed to preserving Door County’s history, engaging the community, and planning thoughtfully for the future.
