Fish Creek, Wis. (August 7, 2023) – After many years of hoping, the Gibraltar Historical Association is happy to announce our August event, “Cornils Riding Stables,” presented by Herb Hardt.
Beginning in the 1920s and up until the 1970s, the Cornils Riding Stables have been part of Fish Creek’s history. Herb will take us on a journey through time, sharing his memories of the finest equestrian facility in the entire area.
The beautiful property remains in the family today and is located across from Peninsula State Park. Once 120 acres, Thade gave up 20 acres during the park’s formation. Thad Cornils, hand-cut horse trails are still used today for skiing and snowmobiling. Herb will talk about the connections with the park and how it intertwines with Camp Meenahga’s history and the fine equestrian events that took place in Fish Creek.
Uncle Ted, or Thade Cornils, was known as the one-man Chamber of Commerce. He had a certain politeness and easy way with people, as read in “Fish Creek Echoes.” His stables were one of the most popular summer attractions, and many people returned year after year.
When Thade passed, Herbert Hardt took over the operation. Herb’s son, our presenter, and many area youths took jobs at the stables and have fond memories of their time there. They also learned the basics of Horse care and a sense of pride in being able to saddle a horse, how to clean saddles and bridles, and how not to have your foot crushed by these beautiful horses. If only we could turn back time and see all those horses grazing along the road.
Join us for a fun event, and bring your special memory or story to tell. The event location is Gibraltar’s Old Town Hall at 4176 Maple Street, Fish Creek, Wisconsin.
Gibraltar Historical Talks allow us to share our past with future generations and enjoy those memories from our youth or our connection to Door County. We also operate the Alexander Noble House Museum. The current exhibit is Unveiling Victorian Weddings, Customs and Courtship. We also offer free, Audio and Docent-led Walking Tours around downtown Fish Creek.
