Sister Bay Historical Society Nominated for 2026 Governor’s Tourism Award for Arts, Culture & Heritage

January 26, 2026 by Laurel Ciohon

Sister Bay, Wis. (January 26, 2026) – The Sister Bay Historical Society has been nominated for a 2026 Governor’s Tourism Award in the Arts, Culture & Heritage category, recognizing its outstanding role in preserving local history while enhancing Wisconsin’s tourism experience.

Presented annually by the Wisconsin Department of Tourism, the Governor’s Tourism Awards honor individuals, organizations, and destinations that elevate Wisconsin tourism, drive economic impact, and strengthen communities across the state.

The Arts, Culture & Heritage Award celebrates organizations that showcase cultural and historical assets to enhance tourism and economic well-being. The Sister Bay Historical Society (SBHS) was nominated for its dedication to preserving Sister Bay’s heritage and transforming it into engaging, immersive experiences for both residents and visitors.

SBHS operates the Corner of the Past Museum, a seven-acre historic site featuring a restored 1875 farmhouse and 16 additional historic buildings, including barns, cabins, a blacksmith’s barn, sawmill, and cottages. Through docent-led tours, educational programs, and special events, visitors and locals gain a meaningful connection to the people and stories that shaped Sister Bay.

A signature example of SBHS’s impact on tourism is Christkindlmarkt Door County, a European-style holiday market held on the museum grounds. The event attracts visitors from across the region to experience traditional foods, artisan crafts, music, and seasonal celebrations, encouraging longer stays, increased local spending, and greater awareness of Sister Bay’s cultural offerings.

In addition to preserving historic structures and artifacts, SBHS maintains archives and digital collections, including Sister Bay Stories, which captures oral histories and community narratives to ensure local heritage remains accessible for future generations.

“The Sister Bay Historical Society is a vital partner in promoting Sister Bay as a cultural destination,” said Ellie Soderberg-Guger, Sister Bay Advancement Association Director. “Their commitment to preservation, education, and collaboration strengthens tourism while honoring the community’s rich history.”

The Sister Bay Advancement Association proudly congratulates the Sister Bay Historical Society on this well-deserved nomination and applauds its continued efforts to preserve, celebrate, and share Sister Bay’s heritage.
