Three Ways to Help Area Shelters as Cat Populations Climb Across the State

October 11, 2025 by Laurel Ciohon

Wisconsin – Animal shelters across the state are currently experiencing very high cat populations. Right now, the Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) has more than 1,000 cats in their care. As many shelters face resource challenges with high cat populations, here are three ways you can help your local shelter.

  1. Adopt. With so many cats looking for loving homes, now is the best time to adopt. In fact, WHS is offering two limited-time promotions to help get cats into loving homes. First, if you decide to take home two kittens, the second one will have half off adoption fees. Second, all adult cat adoptions come with a coupon for 50% off one item at WHS’s Animal Antics store. It is also a good reminder all cats at WHS are neutered/spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped. All adult cat adopters also get to name their own adoption fee!
  2. Foster. Foster parents ensure shelter cats have a calm space to grow up, recover from an illness, or find their new family. WHS supplies foster parents with many essential items they need to care for their foster animal. And the best part is, if a foster parent falls in love with their animal, they get first dibs on adopting. So, if you cannot adopt, consider becoming a part of an amazing team of foster parents who offer temporary shelter for animals in their homes.
  3. Donate supplies. And if those two options are not right for you, there are still other ways you can help. Right now, shelters across the state are in critical need of essential cat supplies. WHS is specifically in need of kitten formula, heading pads and disks, and feeding syringes for neonatal kittens. If you would like to help, you can visit wihumane.org/donate/wish-list to see a list of much-needed items. There, you can also check out their Amazon Wishlist to send items straight to the shelter.

There are many ways to help area shelters during this time of great need. “From donations to adoptions, every little bit counts when it comes to helping area animals and the people who love them,” said Corey Viars, media specialist for WHS. “We always encourage everyone to check out their local humane society to see how they can help during this time of need.”
