Fish Creek, Wis. (July 19, 2024) – Peninsula Music Festival (PMF) has announced the brief return of esteemed conductor Victor Yampolsky to the podium for a special Tchaikovsky concert on August 8th at 7:30 p.m. at the Door Community Auditorium in Fish Creek, Wisconsin.
Victor Yampolsky is an internationally acclaimed conductor with a distinguished career spanning several decades, including serving as PMF’s conductor/music director from 1985 to 2019, and remains its conductor laureate. During his 34 years of leadership, Yampolsky helped grow the orchestra from a chamber ensemble into a full Festival Orchestra.
The evening’s program, titled “A Night in Tchaikovsky’s Mind,” promises to be an unforgettable celebration of one of classical music’s most beloved composers. Born in the Soviet Union, Victor Yampolsky has held prestigious positions with orchestras around the world, including the Omaha Symphony and the Chicago Civic Orchestra, and has guest-conducted with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic, and Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Known for his deep musical insight, dynamic conducting style, and exceptional ability to connect with both musicians and audiences, Yampolsky continues to leave an enduring mark on the classical music landscape.
The concert will open with Tchaikovsky’s Concerto for Piano No. 1 in B-flat minor, Op. 73, featuring the extraordinary talent of Ukrainian-born pianist Inna Faliks. Known for her commanding performances and poetic artistry, Faliks will perform on the festival’s cherished “Esther Browning piano,” bringing a unique depth and resonance to this iconic work. A versatile musician, Faliks is renowned for her mastery of the standard piano repertoire and her innovative, genre-bending interdisciplinary projects. Faliks has performed on some of the world’s most prestigious stages, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Moscow Conservatory. Her collaborations with contemporary composers and her commitment to exploring new musical horizons have earned her widespread acclaim and a devoted following. In October 2023, Faliks’s powerful memoir, “Weight in the Fingertips: A Musical Odyssey from Soviet Ukraine to the World Stage,” was published by Backbeat.
The program will conclude with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74, commonly known as the “Pathétique.” This symphony, Tchaikovsky’s final and perhaps most emotionally profound work, will be conducted with the masterful touch of Victor Yampolsky, providing an evening of intense passion and powerful musical storytelling.
Maestro Yampolsky’s return is highly anticipated — his previous performances have always left an indelible mark on the PMF audience. The concert also gives PMF’s current Maestro, Rune Bergmann, the rare opportunity to enjoy the concert from the audience’s perspective, further highlighting the special nature of this event.
“We are delighted to welcome Victor Yampolsky back to the Peninsula Music Festival,” said Bergmann. “His deep understanding of Tchaikovsky’s music and his ability to convey its emotional richness make him the perfect conductor for this evening’s program. Paired with Inna Faliks’s exceptional piano artistry, this concert is sure to be a highlight of our much-anticipated 2024 Symphony Series.”
