GRAMMY-Winner Dame Evelyn Glennie Headlines “Percussion Party” at Peninsula Music Festival on August 19

August 9, 2025 by Laurel Ciohon

Door County, WIs. (August 9, 2025) — The Peninsula Music Festival (PMF) invites audiences to experience a night like no other on Tuesday, August 19, with Percussion Party—a thrilling and transformative evening featuring internationally acclaimed, GRAMMY Award-winning percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie. Conducted by Rune Bergmann, the Festival’s Music Director and Conductor, this extraordinary program promises to dazzle with its artistry, energy, and emotional depth.

The PMF is not a pick-up orchestra, it is a fully professional ensemble composed of returning musicians from prestigious orchestras and institutions across the country. Each summer, these seasoned artists convene in Door County to perform nine spectacular concerts over three weeks, creating one of the Midwest’s most cherished classical traditions.

“Every summer, this orchestra becomes a family—a collection of some of the most passionate and dedicated musicians I’ve ever worked with,” said Maestro Rune Bergmann. “Bringing a visionary artist like Dame Evelyn Glennie to perform with this ensemble is not only an honor—it’s a once-in-a-lifetime musical experience.”

The evening opens with Vincent Ho’s riveting The Shaman: Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra, composed specifically for Dame Evelyn Glennie. Described by The New York Times as “brilliant and compelling,” the piece explores the spiritual and healing power of rhythm through a dynamic landscape of percussion.

“Dame Evelyn Glennie is not just a musician—she’s a movement,” said Lisa Harper, Executive Director of the Peninsula Music Festival. “She’s changed how the world understands percussion, and having her on our stage is a rare privilege. This performance will stir your soul and shift the way you listen.”

Profoundly deaf since the age of eight, Glennie has become a revolutionary force in music, using her entire body to interpret sound and redefining how it is experienced. With two GRAMMY Awards, over 40 solo recordings, and more than 200 commissioned works to her name, she has collaborated with an astonishing range of artists and delivered landmark performances, including the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics.

The program concludes with Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10, a deeply moving and politically charged masterpiece written in the aftermath of Stalin’s death. With its emotional arc—ranging from darkness and defiance to catharsis and triumph—it’s a powerful testament to the endurance of the human spirit.

These concerts are part of PMF’s 73rd season, which runs August 5–23, 2025, and features an extraordinary lineup of internationally renowned soloists, including pianists Fei-Fei Dong and Avery Gagliano, cellists Luka Coetzee and Sterling Elliott, percussion legend Dame Evelyn Glennie, soprano Jacquelyn Wagner, and the Apollo Chorus of Chicago.
