On January 19 and 20, Door Community Auditorium (DCA) will present new installments of its Movies at the Door, St. Norbert Distinguished Lecture, and Fireside Coffeehouse Concert series. After a Friday evening screening of the Door County-based film June Falling Down, DCA will offer a Saturday morning lecture about humor, health, and happiness. Saturday evening will feature DCA’s annual “Words on Fire” event, an eclectic coffeehouse collaboration by Door County poets and musicians, including former Wisconsin Poet Laureate Max Garland.
Movies at the Door: June Falling Down
On Friday, January 19, at 7 p.m., DCA will present an encore screening of June Falling Down. This feature film set in Door County tells the story of a young woman returning home for her best friend’s wedding, which happens to coincide with the one-year anniversary of her father’s death. Created by Rebecca Weaver and Chris Irwin of Silver Leaf Films, the film features Door County actors Nick Hoover, Claire Morkin, Joanna Becker, and Evan Board, as well as music from Eric Lewis and Katie Dahl. Released in 2016, “June Falling Down” has been warmly received on the film festival circuit, including an award for Best American Independent Feature at the Sonoma International Film Festival.
The screening of June Falling Down is free to the public; freewill donations are encouraged.
St. Norbert College Distinguished Lecture Series: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Health & Happiness
On Saturday, January 20 at 10 a.m., Dr. Lucy Arendt, Professor of Business Administration at St. Norbert College, will present a lecture entitled “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Health & Happiness.” In her lecture, Arendt will consider the many relationships among humor, health, and happiness. Can humor keep us from getting ill or reduce the extent of an illness? Can humor heal us or make us happy? Are happiness and health connected? Dr. Arendt will also discuss why not all types of humor are created equal, and why the kind of humor matters when it comes to health and happiness.
Arendt’s lecture is free to the public (freewill donations encouraged). Coffee and treats from Base Camp Coffee Shop and Discourse Coffee will also be available for purchase.
